For people who have done things online that they would be embarrassed by if everyone knew about, sextortion scams must be kind of scary. I know a lot of people look at porn online, but I'm not sure how many people would be embarrassed by that. Even if you look at weird porn, I'd think that curiosity is plenty of explanation and that there should be no worries. Of course, if you pretend to be a pious asshole in real life, there may be difficulty inventing an explanation!

CrustyOldFart: The sextortion scam would not work on most people. That's true, but there are people who feel a lot of anxiety about their secret desires. Lots of people experience guilt and shame for looking at porn. They allow themselves to be influenced by beliefs that most people have gotten beyond. So some people are susceptible is all I'm saying.

Identity Thieves Target Children, New Law Aims To Help Parents Protect Their Kids
This is an interesting issue. It doesn't seem like it should work if financial systems were properly administrated. Even more interesting is the following observation:
I'm not surprised at this. I worked for Southern CA Edison Power Company from 1999-2001. I caught many parents who got their power turned off for non-payment and that had succeeded in getting it back on in their kids' names. They didn't pay those bills either. If a parent will do this to their own child, many strangers would be happy to do it too.

deathvalleyjake: I would have thought that it would be illegal to make a major financial transaction with a minor. Wouldn't SCE be responsible for knowing who it is making a contract with? Without parental consent doesn't the business have to take full responsibility for these fraudulent transactions?

Goldstein Investigation: Is A Local Stem Cells 'Expert' Selling People False Hope?
An elderly relative was fooled by a medical scam. Not this one, but this is fairly typical of medical scams in general.

recluse: Sometimes I turn off my ringer if I've gotten more than two scam calls in a single day. It gets downright aggravating! Once I forgot to turn on my ringer for over a week. I only missed three calls I cared about.

How to Protect Yourself from Mail Fraud
It's hard to believe that the USPS would change an address through the use of a form. It makes absolutely no sense! This is beyond stupid!
