How Do 18-35 Year Olds Consume Media? SurveyMonkey Audience Results
It seems that skepticism is rampant as well it should be! When the most trusted news anchor is a comedian, you know that the news media has a major credibility problem!

Mistakes Are One Thing But What ABC News Did Is Journalistic Negligence
As far as glaring mistakes go, this may be an isolated incident, but the tendency to take Israel's side in this ongoing conflict is something that's been going on for years. So, yes, this may be a case of journalistic negligence, but the bigger issue is the lack of journalistic integrity shown by the media in the the USA. After all, it's almost like the media acts as Israel's own department of propaganda, practically justifying (or at least downplaying) the way Israel routinely bombs innocent civilians.

This was the first time I saw it and I knew instantly from the first picture that there was a mix up between the Israelis and Palestinians. I was waiting for the ah ha moment when Diane Sawyer finally realized it, which never came. Instead of bursting out laughing, which I was prepared for; I wound up saying "OMG" to myself "she never even realized it!" Amazing!

rense.com used to be a reliable news source

To be honest I'm going to go with #4 and say that none of them are reliable anymore.
It helps to have one of these:

AP Tweet Misread By Internet, Sparks Disbelief And Anger At AP
The sentence is ambiguous and technically could be read to mean two very different things depending on whether crash is linked to "Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 crash" or "crash lands." Which underscores why proof-reading is sometimes difficult since ambiguities such as this tend to not be detected since the writer already knows what she meant. Simply substituting "arrives" for "lands" would have solved the problem, but that's easy to see once you recognize the potential ambiguity.

'Bought Journalism': German bestseller reveals CIA pay Western media for spin & bias
I doubt that direct payment of journalists is very common. It is more likely that the filters described by Chomsky do most of the work.
Editorial bias: five filters

Herman and Chomsky's "propaganda model" describes five editorially distorting filters applied to news reporting in mass media:

1. Size, Ownership, and Profit Orientation: The dominant mass-media outlets are large firms which are run for profit. Therefore they must cater to the financial interest of their owners - often corporations or particular controlling investors. The size of the firms is a necessary consequence of the capital requirements for the technology to reach a mass audience.
2. The Advertising License to Do Business: Since the majority of the revenue of major media outlets derives from advertising (not from sales or subscriptions), advertisers have acquired a "de-facto licensing authority". Media outlets are not commercially viable without the support of advertisers. News media must therefore cater to the political prejudices and economic desires of their advertisers. This has weakened the working class press, for example, and also helps explain the attrition in the number of newspapers.
3. Sourcing Mass Media News: Herman and Chomsky argue that “the large bureaucracies of the powerful subsidize the mass media, and gain special access [to the news], by their contribution to reducing the media’s costs of acquiring [...] and producing, news. The large entities that provide this subsidy become 'routine' news sources and have privileged access to the gates. Non-routine sources must struggle for access, and may be ignored by the arbitrary decision of the gatekeepers.”
4. Flak and the Enforcers: "Flak" refers to negative responses to a media statement or program (e.g. letters, complaints, lawsuits, or legislative actions). Flak can be expensive to the media, either due to loss of advertising revenue, or due to the costs of legal defense or defense of the media outlet's public image. Flak can be organized by powerful, private influence groups (e.g. think tanks). The prospect of eliciting flak can be a deterrent to the reporting of certain kinds of facts or opinions.
5. Anti-Communism: This was included as a filter in the original 1988 edition of the book, but Chomsky argues that since the end of the Cold War (1945–91), anticommunism was replaced by the "War on Terror", as the major social control mechanism.

Freedom but no info: How news is stifled in US
All sorts of restrictions and obstacles block access to information. Journalists are even threatened and intimidated in order to persuade them not to report information that might make the government look bad. So much for open and transparent. Although this is an RT report, it is about complaints made by AP journalists and other journalists working for mainstream media.

Propaganda / Reliable News Sources

Postby desertrat » Sun Jun 07, 2015 7:20 am

Propaganda
Every country produces propaganda to some extent. Sometimes it is aimed at people within the country and sometimes it is meant to influence non-citizens living outside of the country. The problem with propaganda is that it calls all other information shared by a company or agency or country into question. We all know that the USA engages in misinformation campaigns at all levels of government, but the extent to which other countries do the same is open to debate. However, the USA is still the world leader when it comes to propaganda aimed at the American people!

The following is a comment left on another website. The article to which it was a response was a pretty insipid article, but this comment is worth reprinting in its entirety and my understanding of fair use law is that reprinting for educational purposes is permitted:
Four years ago, that same newspaper, The Guardian, ran a story about how the U.S. military was running secret operations trolling and propagandizing the internet. The article, "Revealed: US spy operation that manipulates social media" was also rather prophetic in predicting that other countries might respond in kind.

17 March 2011

The US military is developing software that will let it secretly manipulate social media sites by using fake online personas to influence internet conversations and spread pro-American propaganda.

A Californian corporation has been awarded a contract with United States Central Command (Centcom), which oversees US armed operations in the Middle East and Central Asia, to develop what is described as an "online persona management service" that will allow one US serviceman or woman to control up to 10 separate identities based all over the world.

The project has been likened by web experts to China's attempts to control and restrict free speech on the internet. Critics are likely to complain that it will allow the US military to create a false consensus in online conversations, crowd out unwelcome opinions and smother commentaries or reports that do not correspond with its own objectives.

The discovery that the US military is developing false online personalities – known to users of social media as "sock puppets" – could also encourage other governments, private companies and non-government organisations to do the same.

Though in reality, the story of that Russian propaganda factory that caught Karl Bode's attention (assuming the story is even true and is not itself a counter-propaganda gig similar to 'WMD') seems very amateurish in comparison to the depth and sophistication to the US military's sock-puppetry programs.

Revealed: US spy operation that manipulates social media
Interesting article! Thanks for the link desertrat!
Once developed, the software could allow US service personnel, working around the clock in one location, to respond to emerging online conversations with any number of co-ordinated messages, blogposts, chatroom posts and other interventions. Details of the contract suggest this location would be MacDill air force base near Tampa, Florida, home of US Special Operations Command.

It certainly is a pretty sophisticated operation. When it comes to propaganda, no one can beat the USA!
It also calls for "traffic mixing", blending the persona controllers' internet usage with the usage of people outside Centcom in a manner that must offer "excellent cover and powerful deniability".

Adding different points of view to your propaganda is a nice touch.
