drdesert: That's an eyesore. Even people in favor of the proposed project would have to admit that much. Telescope Peak provides a uniquely undisturbed view for those who climb it and something like that would ruin the view. It's hard to imagine that any amount of lithium would be worth something as ugly as that!

Last I heard all roads up to the trailhead to Telescope Peak are still closed and so it's not likely many people will be making it up to the peak for awhile. So what difference does it make? Besides the hike is way too hard for most people anyways! Especially us old-timers!

NEWS FOR YOU CRUSTYOLDFART: https://www.nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/conditions.htm
You can drive up to the kilns from either Emigrant or Wildrose, but not beyond that point due to snow and ice.

Land purchases add 160-acres to Death Valley National Park
Death Valley NP just keeps growing and growing. These were purchases from private land owners made by a conservation group. They include land in the Owlshead Mtns, in the Panamint Range, near Panamint Springs, and in Saline Valley.
In the Panamint Mountains, a 55-acre former gold mine prospect at 8,230 feet on Porter Peak was patented by the Haskell Mining Company in 1919. Historic artifacts such as glass and pottery shards, a concrete and steel monument, and mine shafts provide a glimpse into mining activities in the early 20th century.

Habituated Coyote Killed By Car In Death Valley National Park
Really dumb idea to feed coyotes. People think they're being nice, but they're setting up a bad situation.
Park rangers educate visitors not to feed coyotes or other wildlife. Park rangers prefer to educate people who illegally feed park wildlife, but do occasionally issue citations. With 1,700,000 annual visitors, educating all of them is difficult. After just a few people fed a coyote, it learns to associate food with roads, cars, and people.

The news I hear out of DVNP right now is that everything is closed. Not sure if they have the roads blocked off, but most if not all services are shut down.
Would you walk a mile for me?

Death Valley National Park Visitor Dies In Apparent Fall From Manly Beacon
The identity of the victim was unknown at the time this article was written, but an abandoned rental car was found nearby and so it shouldn't be too difficult to determine who it was.
A visitor to Death Valley National Park who apparently tried to climb Manly Beacon was found dead at the base of the prominent landmark below Zabriskie Point in the park. A hiking party of three reported the discovery Saturday afternoon near the Zabriskie Point trailhead, according to a release Monday from the Inyo County Sheriff's Office. That afternoon a sheriff's deputy and Death Valley rangers who responded found the man's body and estimated that he had fallen approximately 300 feet from Manly Beacon.

Death Valley National Park closes many facilities, remains open
Most everything is closed, but....
Fuel is available at The Oasis at Death Valley (pay at pump only), Stovepipe Wells (pay at pump only, during calm winds) and Panamint Springs, and the Stovepipe Wells General Store is open. Panamint Springs Resort is open for camping and take-out dining.

There's a sign at the county line warning travelers that everything is closed. Lots of people are still traveling in that direction, but there's more out that way than the park. Just the same the roads in general have a lot less traffic and that's been nice. I live in a nice neighborhood and so I have been enjoying the time off.

Man wanted for illegal acts of vandalism at Death Valley National Park
Some people have no respect for nature. Most of us just want to enjoy the great outdoors in as pristine a state as possible. Other people want to ruin everything and drag the rest of us down to their level.
Just this last January, rangers reported that the vandal defaced rock faces, buildings and other infrastructure with graffiti that reads in part “Steve & Lacy were here.” They believe that Lacy is the name of his dog. There were similar acts of vandalism that occurred in early 2019 during the federal government shutdown, that the rangers suspect committed by the same person.
