The Influence Of Pop Music On Society
There seems to be some truth to the idea that popular music can influence social policy and this might be such a case.
shadylady wrote:New Jersey to teach 2nd graders gender identity
Why do second graders need to hear about this stuff? The one thing I disagree with in this video are the comments made about pornography. Full nudity is not necessarily pornography. There's nothing wrong with appreciating the beauty of the human body in great detail. Nude cartoons designed to help kids to learn about human anatomy are perfectly fine too as long as they are age appropriate and relevant to lessons which are appropriate in a school environment.

I think pop groups use controversy to gain attention and so they write outrageous songs not to promote social change, but to promote their careers.

However, many fans take the lyrics too seriously and as a result "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" becomes a prescription for social change instead of a farcical musical comedy for them.
dilbert wrote:twister: Don't forget about Aerosmith and their song "Dude Looks Like A Lady." As classic as "Lola," "Sweet Transvestite," and "Take A Walk On The Wild Side" might be, the Aerosmith song is right up there with those classics!

People really need to get a grip on reality before we create real problems we can't solve!

WEARING WOMEN'S CLOTHES
This is a video blackturtle posted back in 2008. In it he basically makes fun of all the cross-dressers on YouTube. Or in his own words:
After watching Nalts' Sarah Palin parody video I wondered about the prevalence of cross-dressing on YouTube. Well, there's plenty of transvestite action on YouTube! Lots of guys dressing up as girls!!! LOL!!! As usual I wrote and performed the song!!! It's best to think of this presentation as a parody or as light social commentary. All in good fun!

Here's the video he mentions: https://youtu.be/v59mXowK2t8

shadylady: I'm subscribed to all three blackturtle channels on YouTube (blackturtleshow, blackturtleus, and ruskyed). His sense of humor is top notch. I just posted the following video in the Recreation and Entertainment section of this forum. It's called EXPLAINING JOKES TO IDIOTS and one of the especially good lines in the video is when Bill Maher says, "It used to be that kids went to college to lose their virginity. Nowadays they go to college to lose their sense of humor." In the last couple years I have realized that one of the biggest problems with Trona is all the idiots who have no sense of humor and the vast majority of people in Trona didn't have to go to college to lose their sense of humor. They just never had a sense of humor to begin with.

When it comes to funny videos like the one by blackturtleshow shared by shadylady, I think there are three general reactions: two unhealthy and one healthy. First the unhealthy reactions:
1) Become outraged and read into the video an intent to encourage cross-dressing.
2) Become outraged and read into the video an intent to belittle those who cross-dress.
And as for the healthy reaction:
3) Realize that the video is satire, parody, a spoof, or some other form of comedy and that it's just a harmless joke with no ulterior motive behind it.

As for the general question as to whether children need to learn about the trans community in a public school setting: The answer is no, they don't. It's not a topic they should be protected from, but the school classroom is not the place for the discussion of this sort of thing.

recluse: That's about right. I like to think that the majority of people have a healthy reaction to the kind of stuff posted by BlackTurtleShow, The Babylon Bee, or The Onion, but I also realize that there are some people with issues for whom, shall we say, that's not in their repertoire or beyond their capacity.

Intelligence and a sense of humor are closely related. Generally people who are quick to judge and condemn have very low IQs. People who appreciate humor and who are able to keep things in perspective generally have high IQs. It's very sad when the loudest voices belong to people with the lowest IQs!

This Pornographic Picture Book Is In School Libraries
I looked at the book on Amazon and I didn't see any pornography, but possibly those images weren't included in the preview.

shadylady: From what I can tell there is no actual pornography in the book, but there is sexual content. Pornography is sexual content meant to titillate, whereas the book contains sexual content meant to educate. Also it should be emphasized that mere nudity should never be construed as pornography. From what I can tell, the book is extremely ideological in nature and in my opinion should not be available to anyone under twelve. Matt Walsh says that it is available to "little kids" without specifying an age range. I'd say that any teenager should definitely be allowed to read the book if they feel motivated to do so, but that children under twelve probably don't need access to the book. The problem there is that different people enter puberty at different ages and different people also mature intellectually at different rates and so determining an exact age at which the book might become appropriate for an individual is rather arbitrary.

shadylady & wildrose: I think the most valid claim against the book is that it might give kids ideas for things to try out which they wouldn't have thought of on their own. Kids are curious and some have not internalized cultural boundaries and as a result they might try things which they might regret later or which could lead to a sexually transmitted disease or some other negative outcome. That being said, the USA is in a state of flux and cultural boundaries and norms are constantly changing and being redefined, sometimes in different directions by different groups and so there is a lot of disagreement about what is normal or acceptable. Historically speaking, sexual norms have evolved and mutated in many directions and it's hard to argue that one set of norms is better than another, although there is some crazy stuff which was considered normal by different civilizations throughout history which seems irredeemably repugnant by conventional standards. Take the Romans and the Greeks, for example, they were free do use slaves as sexual toys. It was worse with the Muslims and even worse with the Africans, who were free to torture and mutilate slaves for their sexual pleasure. They even went so far as to slowly torture slaves to the point of death for their sadistically sexual pleasure. It's not an exaggeration to say that slaves who were brought to the USA were extremely lucky. Not only did they escape this sort of treatment at the hands of fellow black Africans, but their descendants also were fortunate enough to live in a country which became modern and affluent.

American Indian tribes weren't exactly nice to their slaves either. Not all tribes were the same, but they had slaves long before Europeans ever arrived in North America. As for sexual practices, Native Americans were all over the map depending on which tribe you're talking about. Some even believed in a third sex and sex with animals was perfectly permissible in some tribes. You name it, there was a tribe that did it!
