In theory this living off the grid lifestyle sounds like a good thing, but the potential dangers of composting human waste are unacceptable. Such activity puts this guy's neighbors at risk. This is why we need governmental intrusion into our private affairs. Some people just don't exercise commonsense and as a result put others in harm's way. I like the fact that this guy is trying to live a zero-impact lifestyle, but he needs to reel it in a little and stop being such an extremist.

Urban Farmers - Rooftop Farms :sun:
A system utilizing empty lots and solar energy would probably work in the desert.

Thanks to Salad, We’re One Step Closer to Colonizing Space
This is Space Age level innovation, but it is interesting one way or the other.

This high-tech farm grows veggies in a warehouse
The expense of this type of a set up would probably be pretty high. Efficiency and being able to produce year around probably mitigates the expense somewhat, but it would take a lot of productivity over an extended period of time to pay for the initial investment.

Back To Eden Gardening: How To Grow Leafy Greens
This might work during the spring and the fall in the desert, but I don't thing short of a cooled greenhouse environment would work during the summer.
