If it's not about plants, but it is about the natural environment of Death Valley, then this is the place to post your info or question.

Talked to a couple people near Ballarat last weekend who said that coyotes in general have become a big problem in and around Death Valley. They said that too many tourists are feeding them and as a result several hang out along side the roads hoping for handouts. This is considered a problem for a number of reasons, but the outcome is that there is a plan to possibly shoot the coyotes that hang out near roads. The irony is that people thinking they're doing something nice for coyotes might wind up being responsible for setting them up for execution.

tronagirl: I'm not sure where the people who you talked to got that story from, but it's not likely that any governmental agency would shoot coyotes. The public backlash would be too much of a public relations hassle. In these politically correct times it's not enough to be efficient, it is also necessary to consider how the public will react. It's costly and it takes a lot of time, but it's how things are done nowadays for worse or even worse. The only time an animal can be destroyed is if it has actually attacked a human. Otherwise, it's not likely that lethal action will be taken even if that would be the most prudent course to take.

Coyote sightings increase during dry spell
If it can happen down south, it could just as easily happen here.

Coyotes, bobcats, and mountain lions often make a meal of pets left out in the yard. If you live within a few blocks of an open area, then you should expect there to be carnivorous critters roaming around the neighborhood, especially at night. Nothing to get all worked up about. We invaded their domain, not the other way around!

Caught on video: coyote stalks man on dog walk in Santee
I would think that anyone walking a pet in that area would want to carry something to defend themselves with. A baseball bat, stick with a sharp point, pepper spray, an electroshock weapon, or something along those lines would be useful in defending against a coyote.

twister: Typically coyotes are very timid around people, but they can become aggressive when they get used to being around humans. Of course, they'll back down when facing an equally aggressive human, but most city dwellers don't know how to confront aggressive coyotes. However, pepper spray is easy to carry and easy to use and so I recommend it.

deathvalleyjake: I'd recommend that all women carry pepper spray at all times. Although it may be a coyote or a human you need to use it on, ninety-nine percent of the time it's going to be a dog that you need the pepper spray for. Most people have at least a few close calls with dogs over the course of a few years, but seldom are other humans an issue and almost never will you need your pepper spray to fend off a coyote or other wild animal, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared.

panamint_patty: Realistically, you're ten times more likely to need to defend yourself against humans than coyotes and another ten times more likely to need to defend yourself against dogs than humans. You're right that dogs are the biggest menace. Then again, we could blame that on irresponsible dog owners of which there is no shortage. But I agree that pepper spray is not a bad idea in any case.
