Just like you're saying, 395 has been an issue for decades! Why the morons in charge haven't done something about the problem is hard to say. It's an obvious problem. It should have been a priority long, long ago. Just goes to show that bureaucrats and politicians often are useless, which may be a big part of why people don't bother voting. There's no accountability to the public.

The Dangers of Highway 395
There's no excuse for 395 still being only one lane in each direction through most of San Bernardino County.

Last I heard there's no way to get to the Wildrose Charcoal Kilns by car. The road up from Panamint Valley is washed out and the road through Emigrant Canyon is damaged also. Usually this means the park service wants to close the area due to some kind of crime or vandalism situation so they can have time to investigate, but maybe this time it's legitimate. Back around 2000 they closed the area after rumors about a lost treasure being found near Pinto Peak were reported in various message boards. At that time they lied and said it was due to some other issue, but that was just a cover story.

shadylady: You might be right. I've never been a fan of the park service. A friend took a motorcycle up Wildrose to the Kilns last week and he said it was smooth sailing as far as he was concerned. The park service has the road closed nevertheless. They could open the road to 4x4 if they wanted without issue, but it's business as usual. SNAFU

What I heard is that they closed the area off as part of a GPS experiment with the base. Rogers Peak being the focal point of interest because of the communications facilities. No word on how long it will last.

Sounds to me like shadylady and BallaratBob are spinning some kind of conspiracy theory. Chances are that a 4x4 with high clearance will get you up to the end of the road, but DVNP has a tendency to be overly cautious and they take their sweet time when it comes to re-opening things. I think they'd close the whole park down if they could and still get paid. Lazy bastards!!!

CrustyOldFart: Yes it's amazing how slow DVNP is to repair roads. It's as if they drag their feet just to keep from getting anything done. Closing that section of the park is particularly aggrevating to people in Ridgecrest and Trona since that's the nicest part of the park to visit, but although we are neighbors, we're far from being a priority to park officials!

The aggravating thing is that the road up Wildrose Canyon has never not been driveable even though it's has been officially closed many times. If they just allowed 4x4s to drive the road, then the road would be repaired by virtue of the traffic passing through. The only problem would be idiots who try to drive poorly equipped vehicles up the road.

Idiots are always a problem no matter what we're discussing. Rental car companies are also an issue. They don't like it when some dumb tourist gets a car stuck on a road that he or she should not have been driving one of their cars on. Insurance companies could also be an issue and there's the ever present threat of lawsuits. For some reason idiots are able to sue when situations are not set up in an idiot proof manner. Go figure!

Idiot proofing dirt roads in wilderness areas? What a concept! But that seems to be what is expected since somehow when idiots cause their own problems they are often able to win lawsuits against whoever can be considered to be responsible for failing to idiot proof a road or whatever happens to be the perceived cause of the problem the idiot got himself into.
