The fight over groundwater rights in the California desert
Implementation of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) will increase the cost of water and impose restrictions which could put some people out of business. How quickly all this happens is paramount since a gradual implementation is easier to deal with than just suddenly trying to do everything all at once.
At the heart of this conflict in the desert is, ironically, the U.S. Navy. The Indian Wells Valley is home to the Navy’s largest single landholding, Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, covering 1.1 million acres, larger than Rhode Island. Ridgecrest, the valley’s biggest, is a military town, owing its economy and higher education levels to the presence of this research and development installation.

BoraxBill: As one Bill to another, the water crisis we're in calls for decisive action. Probably the best thing that could happen to this area in general is for two-thirds of the population to just move away. The current situation is not sustainable.

Albert Hammond - It Never Rains In Southern California (1973)
This song was written in 1973 and so I guess droughts are nothing new here, but the rain we're getting now is definitely nice!
