Public Lands and Conservation

If it's not about plants, but it is about the natural environment of Death Valley, then this is the place to post your info or question.

Crank It Like A Chainsaw?
CrustyOldFart: Something tells me that this isn't what you had in mind... It might not be good, but it is odd...
Would you walk a mile for me?

How the shutdown affects national park services
The real question here is whether or not the gate on Trona-Wildrose Road is open or locked shut.

California Desert Protection: It's good to see more land being protected and available for low impact forms of recreation. I'm in favor of setting much more land aside in this manner and hope that the proper authorities will be able to properly keep the areas safe and free of damage caused by less evolved members of the public.

deathvalleyjake: More public land for non-destructive recreational uses is a good thing. But keep access open so people can enjoy it. However, it must be stressed that enjoying the land does not mean destroying the land and that's a concept that is difficult for many people to grasp.

I could not agree more. People should not be permitted to behave in an irresponsible manner. There should be consequences for their actions.

Redwood Logging | 1946 | Documentary on the Giant Redwood Lumber Industry in California
This is an interesting documentary. The old tools they worked with over a half century ago are shown in use.

Canadian Doctors Combating Illness With Nature
The Young Turks say some crazy stuff, but what they say in this video is absolutely true! They talk about natural landscapes and man made landscapes and one thing Cenk says which resonates with me is how important it is to appreciate the effort people put into taking care of their yards. A neighbor with a well-kept yard with lots of plants is a treasure and should be encouraged and complimented at least every few months!

'How America Works': National Parks
This video provides a really good overview of some of the jobs done by people working at National Parks. It focuses on Joshua Tree NP, but it's more or less the same in other parks too.
