Chimney Fire burning 1000 acres near Kernville
Why do they say it's near Kernville? It's really close to Kennedy Meadows and not too far from Ridgecrest! In either case, it looks like summer is here. Between the 100F+ days and the first big fire of the year, it looks like it might be a scorcher!

Containment at 65 percent for Chimney Fire
Here's a little update on the first big local fire of the summer:
The fire held at 1,826 acres, containment increased to 65 percent and is burning primarily in the Chimney Peak and Owens Peak wilderness areas. Chimney Peak/Canebrake Road is closed to all traffic. Nine Mile Rd is open only to local residents and fire vehicles only, but is anticipated to open at 6 p.m. Saturday. The Pacific Crest Trail will open at 6 p.m. Saturday, pending no further threat to containment lines.

panamint_patty: That's a bit on the morbid side. I guess that's what they call dark humor?

Sherpa Fire Grows To Nearly 6,000 Acres
Thlis is a big fire, but not a record breaker:
The Great Fire of 1910, also occasionally referred to as the "Big Burn," is believed to be the largest single fire in recorded U.S. history. It burned more than 3 million acres in Idaho, Montana and Washington — in all, a total area roughly the size of Connecticut.

I was just at the campground and although there is a lot of burnt forest it had little effect on the campground. No sites were lost. It seems from observations and hearsay that it started in camp site #9 from an unattended camp fire. I found it hard to see any burn area while I was diving through the campground until camp 9 where it is minimal.
The road between the campground and 9 mile is closed until it evaluated and corrective measures are taken against possible landslides. The vastness of the burn area can be observed best from 9 mile canyon rd. which the fire crossed.

California wildfires burn thousands of acres
The guy telling about the fire gets just a little too melodramatic, but otherwise he provides a pretty good update on the fire near Santa Barbara. Although the title suggests that more than one fire is discussed, only one fire is the topic of this news clip.
