HOCKETT TRAIL
This trail ran from Visalia to Lone Pine. It was built 1863 and was used quite a bit for a decade or two, but then other developments made it less relevant.
The HockettTrail is an historical trek across the southern Sierra Nevada mountains. It was used by pack trains, the army, and recreationalists for several decades following its completion. The trail was named after the founder, John B. Hockett, in 1863. It was being constructed at the same time as the Jordan Trail by its founder John Jordan. Mining in Owen’s Valley initially created the drive find a way across the Sierra. In 1865, a couple years following the completion of the Hockett Trail, traders created a wagon route over Walker Passfurther south. Although it would take longer to complete the journeyacross the mountains, it was much safer and easier than the Hockett Trail. The Hockett trail still remained and allowed a variety of people to access this area of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

The Hockett Trail
This is a very brief overview showing some of the sites along the route. Much of the western portion of the route may have been ravaged by wildfires this last summer. I'm not entirely sure as of yet since I have not yet compared the route with the map of the areas hit by the wildfires.

The Early Hockett Trail
Interesting information about this historic trail:
The trans-Sierra supply route of the Civil War period commonly known as the Hockett Trail was completed in 1862-63 for two functions:

moving miners and supplies to and from mines in the Coso Range east of the Sierra.
moving soldiers and their supplies to and from Fort Independence (AKA Camp Independence). This was primarily to defend and promote the interests of white settlers against local Indians.

The first function, the commercial reason for the trail, is the reason why the trail was named after the Visalia businessman John Hockett. For this same reason, the Hockett Trail may also rightly share the name “Coso Trail” with the Dennison and Jordan Trails.

The amazing story of the High Sierra Trail. No trail this long has been constructed by the NPS since the Great Depression.
